Necessity is the Father of Invention

It started with a consulting job; find a way to ease the process of copying, classifiying and clearing photos from SD Cards. On that journey we found the existing process of using consumer-level applications and devices was ripe for optimization.

The most obvious areas are naming for storage and sanity checking. We found that digital cameras may or may not have their clocks set, or set incorrectly (AM vs PM). When storing photos with the intent of accessing them later, accurate exposure date and time can be critical. Some images were captured as Movies and required frame extraction.

Our software automated the process and added contextual data configured by the customer. For this Landscaping firm, contextual data included Client Name, Lot# and Phase.

Then came the smartphones and tablets...

While making photo import tasks easier for consumers, smart devices do not make their file systems available like the SD Cards. This requires software other than consumer level photos apps to access the files. Also, more chances to see a mistaken movie file or high-resolution photo. Last, but not least, the export process was cumbersome.

The need was clear for an app that could restrict the settings involved and upload via wi-fi as simply as the SD Card.

We never metadata we didn't like...

Metadata, information about the photo, contains as much info as the device's operating system can provide. Usually data from all sensors is embedded in the original file. The problem is that not all data in the original file is exported beyond the camera.

The mission became to extract the critical metadata before it can be lost, reading sensors ourselves if needed.

And thus TaskPicX Suite was born.
